With the theme of "Engineering and the Future of Humankind", the aim of this conference was to provide a forum for participants from engineering academies, industries, research institutions and governmental agencies all over the world to share insights in the frontiers of engineering, explore orientation for future development and pool wisdom to meet challenges for the predictable future years. On the second day of the conference, H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, addressed the plenary with a keynote speech in the Great Hall of the People.

In an invited keynote lecture WGI Co-Chair Thomas Stocker presented key findings from the IPCC Working Group I contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis at the parallel session “Environment and Green Development” of ICEST 2014.
